Quick answer: the best supplement post-purchase upsell is a 90-day refill of the bottle they just bought, a shaker or pill case that matches the form, or one complement that does not repeat a high-dose nutrient. One tap, no disease claims. Subscriptions and wallet payments skip the page, so back it up on the thank-you page.
Sell more of the same serving, a complement that does not repeat a high-dose nutrient, or a tool that matches the form (shaker vs pill case). Never put a disease claim on the card. Tag ingredients and exclude clashes. If the order is already a subscription, Shopify will not show the one-click page — use thank-you blocks instead. Measure repeat at 60–90 days, not only today’s take rate.
Supplement buyers did not open a chart. They picked a bottle and paid. The next screen should talk about supply, stacking, and habit — how long this lasts, what goes in the same cupboard, when to ship again.
It should not talk about diseases. In the U.S., DSHEA is clear: dietary supplements must not claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent a disease. That rule does not stop at the product page. It covers the post-purchase card, the thank you page, and the SMS you send tonight.
This article is for Shopify vitamin, powder, and wellness stores. The pairing logic is label math plus replenishment: do not double a nutrient, do complete a stack they started, and sell time (90 days, a shaker, a subscribe later). That is a different engine than skincare (irritation) or pets (species).
Vitamin D orders often already “go with” magnesium or omega-3 in your own routine guides. Offer that complement only if the labels do not double a high dose of the same nutrient.
Never: two magnesiums in one tap
30-day → 90-day of the identical formula. Same serving, more bottles or a larger count. This is LTV: they leave your catalog for a quarter instead of 30 days.
Same product, more days — not a “stronger” SKU
Powder → shaker or extra blender ball. Capsules → travel pill case or weekly organizer. Gummies → a spare bottle clip, not a shaker they will not use.
The tool must match how they take it
If this order already contains a subscription product, Shopify does not show the one-click page at all. Put subscribe-and-save on a future refill (thank you / order status / email), dated to when the bottle empties.
See the reorder playbook for timing
The FDA’s structure/function rules still apply on a one-click card. Allowed: “supports normal muscle function” if that is already on your label and you use the required disclaimer where you must. Not allowed: “lowers blood pressure,” “treats insomnia,” “prevents colds.”
If your paid product is a food or a cosmetic, do not suddenly talk like a drug on the upsell. When in doubt, sell quantity, a tool, or a routine step and leave claims on the PDP your counsel already reviewed. Read the FDA structure/function page.
A store sold a magnesium glycinate 200 mg capsule as the hero. After checkout they offered a “sleep stack” that was another 200 mg magnesium plus botanicals. People who already took a multi with magnesium were now looking at 400–600 mg without a warning on the card.
Support filled with “is this safe to take with what I bought?” That is not a conversion problem. That is a label problem you created in the highest-trust minute of the order.
They tagged every SKU with nutrient:magnesium (and D, iron, zinc, vitamin A). The rule became: if the cart has the tag, the offer cannot have the tag. The sleep SKU stayed in the catalog. It stopped appearing after magnesium. Tickets dropped. Take rate on a 90-day of the same glycinate went up, because the card was simple: “Don’t reorder in 28 days. Add 90 days now.”
A one-click add that is a random “immunity” SKU (careful with that word) spikes today’s AOV and teaches nothing. A 90-day supply changes the calendar.
Track:
Shopify’s own post-purchase guide uses a supplement brand as its example — 310 Nutrition, with roughly a 30% offer acceptance and a 25% AOV lift. Treat that as one case study, not your forecast. In our experience a well-matched refill offer in this category lands somewhere in the single digits to low teens on take rate. Your lever is whether the second SKU is a logical next serving, not whether it is “wellness.”
Also plan the email side. The one-click page sells today. A replenishment email 5–7 days before the bottle empties (days of supply minus a week) sells the next one. Both should point at the same SKU.
When the goal is the next bag after this one runs out, that is a different surface than same-order one-click. Use thank you page reorder offers for depletion dates. Use one-click after checkout for “add to this shipment.”
| Paid cart | Offer | Block if… |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day vitamin D | 90-day of the same D, or omega-3 if no D in that SKU | Offer also contains high-dose D |
| Magnesium glycinate | 90-day same SKU, or a pill case | Second magnesium or a “sleep stack” with Mg |
| Whey or plant powder | Shaker, extra ball, or travel tub of same flavor | A second protein that double-scoops protein + creatine blindly |
| Creatine monohydrate | Shaker, or unflavored 90-day | A pre-workout that already includes creatine |
| Prenatal (if you sell one) | DHA only if the prenatal has none, or a pill case | A second prenatal or extra vitamin A / iron without a pharmacist |
| Already a subscription | Thank-you block: shaker / case / loyalty | Counting on the one-click post-purchase page |
Iron, vitamin A, and anything with a narrow window belong on an exclude list unless a qualified person signs off. When unsure, sell more days of the SKU they already chose.
Most generic guides skip these. They matter more for supplements than for almost any other category, because this is a subscription-heavy, wallet-heavy niche.
Two dates while we are here: Shopify’s old checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts on the thank-you and order status pages stopped being editable in August 2025, and the final deadline for non-Plus stores to move to Checkout Extensibility is 26 August 2026 — four days from today. If your “reorder reminder” still lives in a script, it is about to stop. Details in customize the thank you page.
Personalize with nutrient tags and form factor, not with a “customers also bought immunity gummies” report. Setup patterns: personalize post-purchase upsells. Thank you layout: customize the thank you page and thank you page upsells.
nutrient:mg, nutrient:d, nutrient:iron, form:powder, form:capsule, supply:30, supply:90.
If cart has nutrient:mg, do not offer any SKU with that tag. This one rule prevents most dosage conflicts.
Usually 90-day of the same formula at a small one-time discount on this page only.
Shaker on one-click for powder orders. Same shaker as a thank-you block for Apple Pay, Klarna, and subscription customers who never see the post-purchase page.
Have whoever reviews your PDP read the upsell headline. If they would not put it on the bottle, it does not go on the card.
A refill does not need a big discount. The shopper already proved they want the product. What they need is a reason to decide now instead of in 28 days.
Keep the add-on well under the order total. A $19 shaker after a $49 protein feels small. A $79 stack after a $29 magnesium feels like a second checkout. More on this in post-purchase upsell discount strategy.
Full disclosure: this is our app. We built it so you are not stacking four tools for the same job. Oxify runs one-click post-purchase offers, thank-you-page blocks, a cart drawer, free gifts, BOGO and volume discounts in one place, on Checkout Extensibility.
36 reviews is a small sample — read them on the listing. App details checked on the Shopify App Store, 22 August 2026. Comparing options? See our ranking of post-purchase upsell apps.
Offer the rest of a simple stack they already started, a larger supply of the same SKU, a shaker or travel pill case, or a subscribe-and-save on a future refill — not a disease claim and not a second bottle that doubles the same mineral. Keep copy to routine and supply, not conditions.
No. Under the U.S. Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), supplement labeling cannot claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent a disease. That includes the one-click card, the thank you page, and the email that follows. Stick to structure/function language you already use on the PDP, plus supply and habit (“90 days in one ship”).
Two SKUs that both deliver a large amount of the same nutrient — two magnesiums, two vitamin Ds, a multivitamin plus a standalone that repeats the multi. The buyer can overshoot the label without meaning to. Exclude offers that share a high-dose ingredient tag with the paid cart.
A 90-day bottle delays the next checkout, but it also delays the moment they shop a competitor. Combined with a later subscribe-and-save on the thank you or order status page, you are selling replenishment, not a one-time spike. Track repeat rate at 60 and 90 days, not only take rate today.
Yes. Shopify does not show the post-purchase offer when the order already contains a subscription product. If they just started a selling plan, the one-click page will not appear. Use thank-you-page blocks for a shaker, a travel case, or a loyalty join instead.
Usually no. They already chose a strength and a brand story. Calling the add-on “upgraded” or “clinical strength” makes the bottle they paid for feel like a mistake. Offer a complement (omega-3 with vitamin D if your labels allow the combo) or more of the same, not a replacement.
After a powder. Not after a capsule-only order. After capsules, offer a pill organizer or travel tin. Matching the form factor is the pairing logic — it is not the same as pairing a fashion belt or a phone case.
No. Post-purchase upsell apps from the Shopify App Store work on every plan, including Basic. Only custom-coded post-purchase extensions and in-checkout offers need Shopify Plus. You pick one app under Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page.
Usually 10–15% off a 90-day of the same product, shown as dollars saved per bottle. Keep tools like shakers at a small fixed price. Never make the post-purchase subscription discount bigger than the one on your product page, or the product page price starts to look like a trap.
Tag nutrients. Block doubles. Offer 90-day of the hero SKU. Have whoever reviews your labels read the 40-word card.
