Where Shopify upsells actually appear

There are five places a Shopify upsell can show, and each converts differently. Knowing the map helps you match an app to the moment you care about.

Post-purchase upsells and the checkout.liquid deadline

Here's an angle most "best apps" lists skip. If you set up thank-you-page offers years ago with custom code, they are on the way out. Shopify has retired the old checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts customizations in favor of Checkout Extensibility.

The Additional Scripts box has been view-only since 28 August 2025. The final deadline for Shopify Plus stores was 28 August 2025; for non-Plus stores it is 26 August 2026. Automatic upgrades began in January 2026, and they wipe old script-based customizations.

What this means for you: pick an upsell app built on Checkout Extensibility so your offers keep working after the deadline. Every app in this guide runs on the new stack — but if you're still on legacy scripts, moving now avoids a gap where your upsells simply stop showing.

When a post-purchase upsell won't show

A one-click post-purchase offer needs a standard card checkout to work. It will not appear on some orders, and that's normal — not a broken app.

Offers are skipped when the shopper pays by cash on delivery, gift card, or a wallet or buy-now-pay-later method like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay or PayPal. They also skip orders with duties or multiple currencies, and local-delivery orders.

A few more limits: the order must be at least $0.50 and placed through the Online Store, Shopify allows only one post-purchase app active at a time, and a shopper can accept a maximum of two post-purchase offers per checkout. If you sell heavily on cash on delivery, plan your upsells around the cart and product page instead.
