Quick answer: the best place to turn a Shopify guest checkout into an account is the thank you page, right after payment. Make “save this order to an account” the one loud button, promise tracking, saved details and easier reorder, and add the block in Settings → Checkout → Configurations → Edit. Keep product upsells on the earlier one-click page so the two asks do not fight.
For a first-time guest, the thank you page’s primary CTA should be account creation (Shop sign-in or an email one-time code), not another product grid. Promise tracking, saved details, rewards you actually run, and easier reorder. Put same-order product offers on the post-purchase page instead. Hide the account CTA when the buyer is already logged in.
Guest checkout exists because extra form fields kill conversion. Forcing a password before payment costs sales, which is why Shopify defaults to optional accounts.
After they pay, the job flips. You already have the order. Now you want a way to reach them again without buying the same click from an ad network. Account creation is that job: tracking, saved details, rewards, reorder.
This article is for stores that run a lot of guest checkout and keep stacking widgets on Thank you until nobody sees “save this order to an account.” The mistake here is two primary CTAs, not a wrong product.
Timing matters too: this is the moment of peak trust. They just paid you and want confirmation everything worked. A one-tap “keep this order somewhere I can find it” fits that mood. A second product interrogation often does not.
You add the block in the checkout and accounts editor: Settings → Checkout → Configurations → Edit → page selector → Thank you → Sections → Add block. Shopify locked Additional Scripts to view-only on 28 August 2025, and non-Plus stores must be on the new Thank you / Order status pages by 26 August 2026 — four days from this update. Step-by-step clicks: customize the Shopify thank you page.
The one-click product offer is a different setting: Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page. Only one app can hold that slot. Read one-click upsell after checkout if that is the surface you meant.
Primary: create account / save with Shop or an email code. Secondary: nothing, or a quiet text link below the fold.
Do not put a product grid next to the button
They said yes or no ten seconds ago on the post-purchase page. Thank you is for confirmation and the account, not a second product interrogation.
One product moment per checkout is enough
Hide create-account. Show tracking and, for consumables, a reorder hint on Order status — see reorder offers.
Wrong CTA is worse than no CTA
Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and similar orders skip the one-click product page entirely, so Thank you is your only post-payment screen. You may run one product block or the account block. Pick account if repeat purchase matters more than $12 today.
Still only one primary button
A store added a survey, a referral “give $10,” a product carousel, and “create account” to Thank you. When they finally recorded a session, the heat map showed thumbs bouncing between colors. Account clicks were almost none. The carousel got accidental taps on mobile, then a second checkout they abandoned.
They stripped the page to: order confirmed, what happens next, one green “Save this order to an account — track without the email hunt,” and a small text skip. Account creation from guest checkouts went from “we think it’s on” to a number they could read in Shopify’s customer reports.
Product attaching moved back where it belongs for card payers: the post-purchase page. Thank you stopped competing with itself.
Keep it to facts Shopify can keep:
Shopify’s customer accounts help covers the two systems: current customer accounts (a six-digit email code, Shop sign-in, no password) and legacy password accounts. Match the button copy to the one you actually run. Asking for a password on passwordless accounts is how people bounce.
For a product-shaped thank you page, use thank you page upsells — but not on the same guest as a screaming account CTA.
Suggested Thank you stack for guest-heavy stores:
Order status is a separate page in the editor’s selector, and blocks do not copy across. Give it tracking first, then reorder for consumables. Do not paste “create account” there for people who already did it on Thank you.
If you personalize anything, personalize visibility: guests see the account ask; logged-in buyers see tracking. That is the useful version of personalization on this page — not a product algorithm.
On phones this is even stricter: one screen, one button. Layout rules: thank-you page mobile design.
With current customer accounts, Shopify can already let a guest open their order with an email code or Shop after checkout. That native prompt is easy to bury under app blocks.
Do this in order:
Shop sign-in is not “your loyalty app.” Do not tell buyers to download a brand app to see tracking when Shop or an email code already opens the order. Extra apps on this screen are how the primary goal dies.
Settings → Customer accounts. Current (email code / Shop) vs legacy (password) changes the button copy.
Settings → Checkout → Configurations → Edit → Thank you. Add one account (or loyalty) app block. Remove extra product blocks for guests if your app can target them.
Do not repeat a product grid on Thank you for the same card-paying guest who just answered an offer.
If your app cannot hide it, at least change the headline: “You’re checked out as [email],” not “Create account.”
Three test orders, three different pages. Confirm each sees the right blocks. Refund yourself.
Full disclosure: this is our app. We built it so you are not stacking four tools for the same job. Oxify runs one-click post-purchase offers, thank-you page blocks, a cart drawer, free gifts, BOGO and volume discounts in one place, on Checkout Extensibility — so the product ask and the account ask can each get their own surface.

Pick one primary job per visitor type. For a first-time guest, account creation usually beats a second product card: you get tracking, saved details, and a way to reorder. A product upsell can still run on the earlier post-purchase page (one click, same order). Do not make the two CTAs fight on the same screen.
Go to Settings → Checkout → Configurations → Edit. That opens the checkout and accounts editor. Use the page selector → Thank you, then add an app block under Sections. The Additional Scripts box has been view-only since 28 August 2025, and non-Plus stores must be on Checkout Extensibility by 26 August 2026.
No. One-click upsells use the post-purchase page (Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page), which shows after payment and before the thank you page and can add a line to the paid order. Account creation is a thank-you or customer-accounts feature and never charges a card.
Four boring, true things: order tracking in one tap, saved addresses and faster checkout next time, rewards or a simple stamp card if you actually run one, and a reorder button later. Do not promise a discount you will not honor, and do not ask for a password if you use current customer accounts with an email code or Shop.
Not on current customer accounts. They enter their email and get a six-digit one-time code, or sign in with Shop. A password field only belongs on stores still running legacy customer accounts. Match your button copy to the system you have enabled in Settings → Customer accounts.
Yes. Wallet and BNPL orders skip the one-click post-purchase product page, but they still land on the thank you page. That is exactly when an account CTA earns its place — you cannot attach a product in one click, but you can still keep the customer.
No. If they are already logged in, hide it. Show tracking, a reorder hint, or nothing extra. A create-account button for someone who has an account looks broken.
No. Thank you and Order status app blocks work on all plans through the checkout and accounts editor. Plus is only required for customizing the checkout steps themselves. Nobody on any plan can paste scripts into Additional Scripts anymore.
Open the Thank you editor. Make account the primary block for guests. Move the product attach to the post-purchase page. Test guest, Apple Pay, and logged-in.
